Bristol chocolate factory to make way for new homes
Hundreds of new homes could created in Bristol following a £50 million investment into the site of a former Cadbury's chocolate factory.
This Is Gloucestershire reports that proposals for the Keynsham development include a new primary school, hotel and nursing home, alongside the 700 properties already pledged by Taylor Wimpey.
According to the developer, there will be a wide variety of homes on offer, from start units to family homes and retirement properties, boosting the chances of architect jobs turning up.
Chocolate production stopped on the 220-acre site, known as Somerdale, in March last year, says 24 Dash. The site has since been left unoccupied. However, this doesn't mean that the house builder is keen to get rid of the historic chocolate-making factory.
"The Cadbury factory was a significant landmark and we want to ensure that the buildings we create will continue to contribute to what is a distinctive part of Keynsham," remarks Nigel Holland, managing director for Taylor Wimpey Bristol.
"We will be investing over £50 million in this scheme and will create a substantial number of new jobs, both during the construction phase and hopefully thereafter within the employment use elements," he added.
There are also plans to redevelop the Fry Club, a social club and conference centre. Other existing sports facilities, open spaces and woodland surrounding it will also be preserved.
