Construction jobs at M5 services development
Construction recruitment in Gloucester will see a small increase in activity next year due to the newly approved construction of a motorway services site on the M5.
The Daily Telegraph reports that planning permission has been granted for the Gloucestershire Gateway Project; a £35m motorway services site, located on the northbound and southbound carriageways between junctions 11a and 12 at Brookthorpe, Gloucester.
Combined with the jobs in construction created during its building phase, due to begin in 2011, the development will create a total of 300 new positions including retail, management and service staff. The services site will be supplied by local businesses, with produce and meat from local farms and butchers for road-side grocery shopping alongside a cafe serving locally served food. Naturally, there will also be a play area for children and the all-important petrol station.
"Our focus is all about promoting local," said Sarah Dunning, chief executive of partner company and operator Westmorland Ltd. "We have 38 years experience of delivering local benefit in Cumbria and we look forward to doing the same in Gloucestershire."
The site is expected to open its doors in 2013. In the planning application, the designers have set themselves a target of an 80% reduction in energy use in comparison with a traditional motorway services site - a goal which will require specialist construction skills in insulation and other energy efficiency measures.
