Contractors bidding to construct Rolls Royce factories
Contractors are putting the finishing touches on their bids to construct new Rolls Royce factories in Rotherham and Sunderland.
The engineering giant, not to be confused with the luxury car manufacturer, is planning to have four new factories built in anticipation of an increased demand for aeroturbines and nuclear power station equipment.
According to The Construction Enquirer, the investment programme is expected to create up to 800 jobs in engineering, as well as hundreds more throughout the construction process.
It has been claimed that the arrival of such a well-known engineering company will be good for both Rotherham and Sunderland as a whole for a number of reasons.
Vince Middleton, who is the managing director of Rotherham manufacturing company Newburgh, had previously complained about a lack of skills in the area but insisted that this would be likely to change with the arrival of Rolls Royce.
Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, he said: "Indigenous businesses will suffer in the short-term when Rolls-Royce recruits staff but in five or 10 years, it will be good for the area because they will have raised the game of everyone in the region."
Miller, ISG and Kier are reportedly amongst the companies bidding to construct the new factories. Building work is expected to begin in the spring.
