Crossrail tenders advance works at five stations
London's CrossRail project is to create more railway jobs this year, as the ambitious scheme issues tenders for advance works for five major tunnelled stations.
Notices for advance works at Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel were posted in the OJEU earlier this week. These stations are some of the most complicated tunnelled stations in the CrossRail scheme, with work taking place in some of the busiest areas of the capital.
Civil engineering jobs and other skilled railway jobs will be on offer at each of the work sites once a successful tender has been made by a contractor. As the stations are among the largest involved in CrossRail, with station boxes up to 300m long and 25m wide, a robust and well-staffed workforce will be needed to finish work without delay. If the advance works are held up then a knock-on effect could set the entire project back, causing disruption to London's strained rail infrastructure.
Andy Mitchell, Programme Director for CrossRail said: "These significant pieces of work will be crucial to the Crossrail programme as they will enable each station to receive the Tunnel Boring Machines on schedule at each site."
Farringdon Station is expected to see the most extensive work and will possibly offer the most opportunities in construction recruitment. Excavation and infill earthworks, installation of a temporary construction platform, as well as modification and installation of ventilation infrastructure are described in the OJEU notice, as well as drainage diversion, demolition, shaft construction and other assorted advance works.
