Crossrail will create 14000 jobs

The Crossrail project will create 14,000 construction jobs at the peak of construction, it was revealed today.

Crossrail launched its Skills and Employment Strategy, revealing the number of people that will be employed during the peak construction period of the railway between 2012 and 2015.

The Strategy explains how local people will be provided with the opportunity to work on the construction. During the launch, Crossrail announced its partnership with Jobcentre Plus, which will be used to match local people with the available opportunities.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, told the Construction Enquirer: "We want Londoner's to benefit from this project in every way and that means giving them the chance to learn the skills and benefit from the jobs created by the scheme.

"The skills strategy and various training and apprenticeship schemes will help us give young inhabitants of this great city the chance to build and benefit from Crossrail as a lasting legacy," he added.

Crossrail have committed to providing a minimum of 400 apprenticeships thought its supply chain during the project. All of the main work contracts are obliged to deliver one apprentice per £3m spend.

Terry Morgan, Crossrail Chairman said: "Crossrail's Skills and Employment Strategy will be a benchmark for the project's commitment to providing the skills required to deliver Crossrail and future major construction projects.''
