Electrical installation jobs rises in popularity

Almost 100,000 people are training to become electricians, latest figures released by City & Guilds reveal.

Research conducted by the education specialist found that electrical installation is now the country's most popular vocational course. There are approximately 97,411 people currently studying electrical installation, which will leave them qualified to carry out a range of electrical jobs.

Other courses currently studied that feature in the top ten include general construction, which has 43,474 students and plumbing, which is studied by 23,369 people.

City & Guilds have seen a rise in the number of people enrolling on vocational courses for practical trades. In the last year, the number of students has increased by 11 per cent.

Chris Jones, Director General and CEO of City & Guilds, told the Construction Enquirer: "Our learner data reveals that Britain really has got talent!''

"Growing numbers of people are recognising the value of work-related learning and equipping themselves with the right skills and training they need to succeed and lead in today's fast-paced economy.''

"With apprenticeships and work-related learning now a firm priority of the UK's education agenda, demand for skills-based courses has never been higher," he added.

Students appear to be more aware of the green economy as the research indicates a rise in the number of people studying subjects such as energy efficiency, conservation and environmental studies.

Students on such courses receive qualifications which enable them to install environmentally friendly items such as solar panels and domestic micro wind turbines.
