Engineering company's latest contract could boost recruitment

Engineering company Balfour Beatty has acquired £188 million worth of international rail contracts, it has been announced. The company was awarded several railway engineering jobs across the world, countries include Sweden, Germany and its latest contract is a £64 million deal to electrify more than 600km of railroad in China.

This latest deal could boost civil engineering jobs within the firm. Balfour Beatty will deliver an over head contact line and traction substations for the Ministry of Railways of China's Xinxiang-Heze-Ranzhou-Rizhao railway, under the scheme.

Its contract with Sweden saw an £82 million deal when Swedish rail administrator Banverket contracted the firm to engineer nearly 1.300km of track in the Vastra Gotaland region. Balfour Beatty was also awarded two contracts worth £39 million to provide a full service for railway infrastructure on the Coswig to Neustadt line and the Leipzig to Plagwitz line in Germany.

Chief executive of Balfour Beatty, Ian Tyler said: "We are delighted to have been awarded these contracts which utilise Balfour Beatty's multi-disciplinary rail skills and highlight our customers' confidence in our ability to deliver complex rail projects."

The job in China is due to finish next summer, which consists of working on a 616 kilometre, double track, passenger and freight line.

Balfour Beatty paid £380 million for the expertise of US professional services company, Parsons Brinckerhoff earlier this year.
