Liverpool Royal Hospital to build biocampus
Health chiefs in Liverpool have revealed plans for a new medical research centre, which will be built alongside the renovated Royal Liverpool Hospital.
A blueprint for the bio-medical science campus has already been drawn up and the centre will be built on the land left vacant by the main hospital's redevelopment.
Hospital officials have said they expect the first stage of construction to start next spring, with the rest of the site being completed when the new £450 million Royal is finished and the old site has been demolished.
Project director for the new Royal Hospital, Helen Jackson told the Liverpool Daily Post: "The BioCampus will create a lot of construction jobs and help to regenerate the area, in 10 to 15 years time it will be unrecognisable."
Health bosses hope drugs to treat some of the the worlds most serious diseases will be developed at the the BioInnovation Centre (BIC).
Small businesses that specialise in drug development will be able to work at the site. It is thought such businesses will be able to work alongside the clinical and research departments in the hospital and at the nearby University.
Ian Greer, Vice Chancellor for the faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Liverpool said: "It is a great opportunity, we are in a very lucky position because the hospital is so close to the medical school.''
"We also have institutions like Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, there is so much expertise. There is potential to research and develop drugs that could save countless lives globally," he added.
