Manchester Council approve skyscraper
Manchester City Council has granted full planning permission for a 33 storey residential tower to be built in the city centre.
The tower which will provide accommodation for 520 university students, is being developed by Student Castle. The project team for the tower, which will be on Great Marlborough Scheme includes Canmoor Projects, Shepherd Construction and other regional building consultant.
Once built, the tower will be the second tallest building in Manchester, after the Beetham Tower. The £45m development, will be home to undergraduate students, postgraduates and international students. The rooms will be a mixture of self contained studio apartments and communal accommodation.
It has yet to be announced when construction work on the tower will start, but the project will provide a much needed boost to construction recruitment in the local area. The development will measure 109 metres and is expected to be due for completion in 2012.
Chief executive of Student Castle, Edward Cale told Construction News: "We are delighted to have been awarded planning permission for this landmark scheme in Manchester.
"As a new expert developer within the sector we are pleased to have this opportunity to make a positive contribution to the regional economy and higher education sector in one of the UK's most vibrant cities," he added.
Student Castle have said they are also targeting student accommodation developments in other cities which include London, Bath, Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton, Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leeds, Newcastle, Oxford and York.
