Melton Mowbray the location for new Sainsburys store
Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has thrashed out a deal to build a new store in Melton Mowbray, reports Melton Times.
The chain has agreed a contract with Melton Council to purchase a site on Nottingham Road, giving the council a healthy cash boost of £12-15 million.
In addition, as part of the contract, Sainsbury's will have to make £220,000 worth of contributions to several town initiatives, cites Construction Enquirer, including £70,000 towards a town centre management scheme and £70,000 towards a town centre linkage scheme.
The council has given assurances to local residents that they will be kept in the loop when it comes to the beginning of building work, which may boost construction recruitment in the area.
Melton Council Leader Byron Rhodes commented on the project: "Staff will be working closely with Sainsbury's and other partners on the exciting employment opportunities this new sites offers for the town and the people that live near and around the store. We will also work with them to ensure residents and near neighbours are kept informed as the work gets underway.
"In addition, the substantial receipt the council has now received will mean that this council's finances are significantly more secure as well as providing the opportunity for future investment in the borough," he added.
