Middlesex Hospital site redevelopment approved
Plans for the transformation of the former Middlesex Hospital site in London have been conditionally approved, Fitzrovia News reports.
Westminster City Council granted permission for the scheme, submitted by a consortium comprising Exemplar, Aviva and the former Kaupthing Bank, which will see the site redeveloped into a mixed use commercial and residential area.
Plans include the construction of 237 apartments, 54 affordable homes and 210,000 square feet of office space, due to be built across three nine - 11 storey towers. A further 21,000 square feet has been allocated for shops and restaurants.
The centrepiece of the three-acre development will be a landscaped public square which is built around the former hospital's chapel - a listed building.
Such a comprehensive project, which also includes the creation of a primary care facility and an educational centre, will surely require an extensive construction recruitment drive in order to fill all the building and engineering roles necessary for the scheme's completion.
Mace, Balfour Beatty and Sir Robert McAlpine, among others, have been shortlisted for the £160 million building contract. The successful partner will be announced next month.
Speaking to Construction Enquirer on behalf of Exemplar, Mark Younger said: "We are delighted that Westminster City Council has approved our plans for the former Middlesex Hospital site, as it is one of London's most important development opportunities.
"With enabling works underway, we are already bringing this vacant site back into use and anticipate strong demand for the offices, retail units and apartments once we begin marketing later this year."
