Multi-million redevelopment project to create new construction jobs

A national construction group has submitted planning permission for a £220 million redevelopment of Blackpool Talbot Gateway.

If the planning application is successful the first phase of construction will begin in 2011, creating new jobs in the construction industry.

The application was submitted by Muse Developments, a national construction and regeneration company, and includes over 900,000 sq ft of new office and business space, a food superstore, hotels, shops, cafés and restaurants.

New headquarters for Blackpool Borough Council will also be built, where more than 1,200 staff will be relocated to.

The scheme will be delivered in partnership with Blackpool Council, ReBlackpool and the North West Development Agency.

Mike Horner, regional director at Muse, said: “Our development will deliver huge, transformational change to this part of Blackpool.

“The creation of a new vibrant commercial district around the train station and a new transport interchange will create hundreds of new jobs and attract new investors and occupiers to the town.

“This scheme will change the face of the town and we’re hopeful that it will act as a catalyst for growth for the rest of Blackpool.”

Doug Garrett, chief executive of ReBlackpool, said: “Talbot Gateway is a scheme that will bring business and the local community together in a high quality public space, making the area more attractive to new ventures – and ultimately creating employment, growth and further opportunities for investment.

ReBlackpool has already been boosting construction recruitment in Blackpool over recent years through a range of redevelopment projects in and around the town, including St John's Precinct and Blackpool's southern gateway.
