Permanent construction and engineering jobs are most sought after

Figures published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and professional services firm KPMG, found that the most sought after jobs are permanent positions in the construction and engineering sector.

The statistics were collected in a survey, over 400 jobs agencies and found that over the last month there was a rise in hiring. Permanent placements were at their strongest since two and a half years ago, with temporary staff being better than any point in the last 19 months.

REC chief executive Kevin Green,, told the Financial Times: "This is very positive news. Employers in nearly all sectors are lifting recruitment freezes and starting to hire again. Flexibility in the UK's labour market has proved effective in ensuring that unemployment has not reached the levels experienced by some of our international competitors.""

This comes after the Manpower Employment Outlook survey found that UK employers' hiring intentions rose from minus five per cent in the first three months of 2009 to zero per cent in the first quarter of 2010. Mr Green also said the only way is up, and the situation could improve even more if the government would do more to help the one million unemployed 18-24 year olds. With temporary jobs, which could then turn into permanent places, depending on how they get on, as well as apprentices for young people in order to gain important skills.
