Second phase plans for BBC site revealed

Plans for the redevelopment of the former, iconic BBC site at Wood Lane have been submitted by Imperial College, London.

Proposals for the second phase of the College's expansion, called Imperial West, have been drawn up by architects, Aukett Fitzroy Robinson and includes, Architects Journal writes, designs for an academic health science centre.

The 87,900 square metres mixed use project will also comprise research facilities, a four star hotel, healthcare services and retail space. The plans also outline a new 'London square' which will equal Soho Square in size.

Additionally, Construction Enquirer reports, the developers are proposing a 40-storey tower block which will contain one, two and three-bedroom apartments, geared towards college workers, NHS staff and private residents.

Phase one is currently under construction: four ten-storey towers which will provide accommodation for 600 students. This phase should be complete by August and will no doubt generate some facilities management jobs, to ensure operational effectiveness.

Speaking about the scheme, Imperial West's project director, John Anderson, said: "Imperial West will enable the College to expand upon the success of its South Kensington site to create a second, open access academic campus that provides the physical infrastructure for world-class research and teaching, leading edge facilities for business development and technology transfer and create an attractive environment to live and work in.

"We have refined the designs of the residential building, the academic health building and the office building to respond positively to residents' comments as well as to the requirements of the planning authorities and Greater London Authority."
