Supercomplex to be built in Shrewsbury

Plans to turn three separate shopping centres into one large multiplex have been unveiled, ukbusinessproperty.co.uk reports.

The Riverside, Darwin and Pride Hall shopping centres in Shrewsbury look set for a huge renovation project which could see them become one single 480,000 square foot complex.

Under current plans, the Riverside Centre will be bulldozed and a 225,000 square foot complex built in its place that will stretch to the nearby Darwin and Pride Hall centres.

The proposals also feature a 95,000 square foot department store, space for 50 new shops, 10 restaurants, a 300-space underground car park and integrated office space.

Amongst the features outlined are a pear-shaped glass roof, similar in design to Trinity Leeds and Bristol's Cabot Circus.

The development is set to create scores of construction jobs, as well as hundreds of retail positions once the work has been completed.

Despite being the first application for planning permission, the proposals are expected to be given the green light, having already gone through public consultation and exhibition.

Speaking to constructionenquirer.com, chairman of UKCPT (UK Commercial Property Trust) Christopher Hill explained: "The new Riverside project in Shrewsbury is a significant project for UKCPT, and a transformational scheme for the town.

"In conjunction with its development manager, Shearer Property Group, UKCPT has a wealth of expertise and experience in active asset management of retail property."
