Tender released for final Crossrail tunnel

Contractor bids are being invited for the final tunnel of the Crossrail project.

The Crossrail project, which created railway jobs in the London area when work began in 2009, is set to continue to boost construction recruitment as the company seeks contractors for the final stretch of work.

Contractors have been invited to express their interest for the final running tunnel contract by 24 March 2010. The 'Package C310' tender is for the construction of a twin set of 6.2m diameter, 2.6km long tunnels from Plumstead Portal to North Woolwich Portal.

The work will include building sumps for tunnel drainage, the construction of cross passages, as well as shafts, portal structures and launch chambers at Plumstead and North Woolwich.

Overall, the Crossrail project has created many railway jobs since work began on the £16.9bn scheme to build major new railway connections under central London. The scheme to improve London's travel infrastructure was originally proposed in 1989 and has been repeatedly revised and updated since that time. In 2001, Cross London Rail Links, a joint venture company, was created to develop the scheme further and in 2008, The Crossrail Act 2008 gave the company the powers necessary to construct the line.

Since that time, the company has been tendering contracts for the construction of the new tunnels and underground stations, as well as for work at existing stations including both platform extensions and a significant number of complete rebuilds. These contracts are certain to create opportunities in construction work, from labouring to electrical jobs and engineering work.
