Worcester City to build new stadium

Worcester City Football Club are celebrating have permission to build a new stadium granted by their local council.

The developments, near junction 7 of the M5, will also include a hotel, car park, restaurants, offices and a motorcycle showroom.

It is estimated that the decision to approve the plans will create up to 1,000 new jobs in Worcester, as well as significantly aiding local construction recruitment.

In an interview with BBC News, club director Anthony Hampson made no qualms about how important the 3,000-seater stadium would be to the future of the club.

"I'm delighted. It's a major step forward for the survival of the club," he said.

"We were near bankruptcy at one stage but we've managed to swing the situation round and make the club break even and invest in the playing squad as well. We've got a lot of support in the city for the club that we didn't have before."

According to The Construction Enquirer, the stadium will be built in three phases, with a lot of planning for the first stage of construction already under way.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles is expected to make the final decision on the plan during the summer because the development is contrary to local planning policy.
